Saba: mode and dromos
This article is an adaptation from the book The Theory of Rebetiko by Carmelo Siciliano
Saba mode
The Saba mode has its theoretical basis and final on D, where the fundamental element 5x-saba is based. The incipit on F characterizes the mode. The elemental structure is completed by a 5x-chitzaz on F. The range can be extended by a 5x-chitzaz on high C (or, less commonly, only with high D) and a 5x-rast on low G, establishing C as the mode’s sub-final.

The modal dominant coincides with the incipit F. The attraction E 1-comma flat to E flat, though rare, may occur in descending phrases and/or in phrases gravitating around D.

Dromos Saba
The adjustment to equal temperament is referred to as dromos Saba and is realized as illustrated in the following figure. The attraction E to E flat occurs more frequently in the dromos than in the mode.
