The Nichavent (Νιχαβέντ) mode has its theoretical basis and final on rast [C], where the fundamental element 5x-nichavent is based, giving the mode its name. This mode is not characterized by any specific incipit, which may occur on rast [C] or neva [G]. The elemental structure is completed with a 4x-kiourdi or 4x-chitzaz on neva [G]. When the top element is the 4x-kiourdi, Nichavent is referred to as “diatonic” (the elemental structure is based exclusively on diatonic elements, namely the 5x-nichavent and the 4x-chitzaz); when the top element is the 4x-chitzaz, Nichavent is referred to as “semi-diatonic” (the elemental structure is based on a diatonic element, the 5x-nichavent, and a chromatic element, the 4x-chitzaz). If the limited range of phrases prevents the form from being determined, it need not be specified. The extension is possible with a 4x-chitzaz on gegkiach [low G], making irak [low B 1 comma flat] the sub-final of the mode.
The primary modal dominant is neva [G], while the secondary is tsargkiach [F]. The following attractions may occur:
The adjustment to equal temperament is referred to as dromos Nichavent or equal-tempered Nichavent mode (or Nichavent*) and occurs as illustrated in the following figure. All the characteristics of the corresponding microtonal mode are preserved.
