The laouto is the noble stringed instrument of Greek traditional music—deep-bodied, resonant, and built for rhythm and melody alike. With roots reaching back to Byzantine and Ottoman times, the laouto is central to folk music across mainland Greece and the islands. This course introduces you to its rich tonal world: dynamic strumming, modal scales, and the art of accompaniment in traditional dance music. Whether you’re drawn to its powerful drone-like bass or its bright melodic lines, the laouto invites you to explore the living pulse of rural Greece.
