The choumagioun (χουμαγιούν) element has its basis and theoretical position on neva [G], although it is also transposed to other positions. Like chisar, it is a reentrant element, meaning its basis lies at the center of the element, rather than at its lower degree. Choumagioun takes its name from its use in the opening phrases of the Choumagioun mode. In staff notation, a theoretical intervallic structure of 12·5·9·4 commas is defined, classifying choumagioun as a hard chromatic element.
The adaptation of choumagioun to equal temperament is referred to as the equal-tempered choumagioun element (or choumagioun*) and occurs as illustrated in the following figure.
