Rhythm is the heartbeat of Greek music—complex, driving, and full of character. This online course explores the rich world of Greek rhythmic patterns, from asymmetric meters like 7/8 and 9/8 to subtle regional variations found in island dances, mainland traditions, and rebetiko music. You’ll learn to feel, count, and play these rhythms with precision and flair, gaining insight into how rhythm shapes phrasing, improvisation, and ensemble interaction. Whether you’re a percussionist, instrumentalist, or dancer, this course will sharpen your rhythmic intuition and connect you more deeply to the pulse of Greek music.

- Ornamentation and articulation
- Rhythms and phrasing
- Modal theory (Greek modes, makams, dromi, and scales), and analysis and practice of modes such as Chitzaz, Chitzazkiar, Chouseini, Nikriz, Ousak, Rast, Segkiach
- Creative approaches to modal improvisation (taximi)
- Step-by-step lessons on selected pieces from the Greek and Asia Minor repertoire, carefully chosen for their relevance to the instrument
